Project: Adding a table top to a Vintage Chippy Frame/legs
This was a long time to finish project.
Added a Dick and Jane Friends and Neighbours reader, Paddy the Beaver, a mid-century English Sadler 2 cup size teapot and a bib apron to the tablescape, a definite mixture of vintage. The table colour looks more green than pale grey in this photo, scroll down to the next picture for a more accurate colour.
The booth next to mine, Autumn Rose, sells wonderful vintage aprons and the (double lined) apron with just a touch of pale lilac made the dress form look prettier).
Added a Summer sign (dreaming of) and shells for another view of the tabletop finish.
The table frame and legs with flaking green under pink paint was stacked in the shed for about 3 years.
Finally brought it into the house where it shed a lot of flakes on the carpet. Eventually found and added two coats of Fusion Tough Coat Sealer from Fusion Mineral Paint, which left the flakey look and kept the chippy paint chips on the legs and frame.
Frame sat for several months in the living room covered with a couple of boards and a towel.
Below - Tough Coat and the grey Milk Paint powder
This is a view of the table when the Tough Coat sealer was applied/drying. It was resting on the pine top DH made for the cabinet in the kitchen.
Then he found a great piece of wooden countertop at a garage sale and the piece of glued up pine was available for the table top project.
You see this wooden countertop view (below) in so many of my photo's.
Table frame had a few more months to wait but now it was covered by the pine ex-counter top piece and used as a project base, as a place to pile stuff, the usual uses for a flat surface. Always handy to have another surface available.
DH decided that the prepared pine top would work for the table top (with some changes). In late August (when I wasn't home to take pictures) he cut a piece off the large board and made one drop leaf, used some seriously old hinges (from our junk box) plus added a table drop-leaf support and stopper (small wooden piece attached under drop-leaf). I sealed (painted) the underneath the tabletop with a wash of light blue chalk paint.
DH's decision to add one drop leaf was based on an antique Bakers table with turned legs and one drop leaf, with a pine top, probably has old milk paint with the colour made from ox blood. This was his Mom's and it was very old when she bought it. Love the hinge and the age of the wood.
Back to the replacement table top project.
The table top was attached to the frame with metal brackets (see arrow). The word Schellley was written on the frame when it originally arrived and I left it alone.
I did experiment trying to match the colour of the legs and got fairly close.
Here is what I did to match the colour of the frame/legs to a pine board.
First tried pink and red chalk like paint thinned 1 paint to 2 water. Mixed, tested on a pine board (that had the grey chalk paint underpainting). This was not the right colour.
Next mixed pink and orange chalk like paint, 1:2 water, foam brushed onto the grey stained piece of pine board. Dried. Used clear then dark wax and wiped/polished when dry. The colour match was fairly good.
After looking at the colours against the table legs for several days the pinkish-orangish colour was just too intense for a current kitchen table top.
Eventually I used the milk paint powder (grey) that I had picked up from a garage sale years and years ago. I mixed it 1 tsp power to 3 Tsp of cool water and stirred until smooth. That was my wash.
Applied two coats of wash on the table top and all edges using a foam brush. Then the table sat, covered with a towel, used for projects or loaded with thrifted finds for another couple of months.
This March I finally decided that the light grey wash would be the table top colour and sealed the top with 3 coats of Minwax Satin Finish 360 Tudor, sanded very lightly before and after each coat. Enough was enough and I was finished with the small table.
It will be going over to my booth.

I've got a huge pile of shells. Thought I knew what I was going to do with them. They look cute like this. I need to put mine to use.
ReplyDeleteFound you thru Vintage Charm
I use a lot of small shells for my mosaics
and broken stuff, plates, pottery, etc.
The big ones like this are too large for what I make
like I said, thought I had an idea in mind
used the space in the house where I was going to do that
so now plan 2 needs to come into action
I love that old vintage table and chairs
WOW! You turned that old table into a gorgeous piece! Great job!

Nice work on the table. It's unique with just the one leaf. I used to have an oak one of a similar size with two leaves. I loved that old table. Can't remember what happened to it. I probably gave it to someone. It was just so versatile because you could change the size so easily by putting the leaves up or down. Wish I had it now. sigh
ReplyDeleteYou do remarkable work. Jilda has a small crystal pitcher that her dad found at the car wash near wher he lived. It's one of the lat gifts he gave her before he died. She wrote about it in her monthly column in The Leaf.

The route to complation on this table was a good read. And familiar. Sometimes we just need to wait and let the inspiration happen on its own. I sure related to that flat surface thing! I have to watch out for my hubby though because he can cause more damage in a few minutes than you would believe! Piling tools, using as a surface to paint on, etc. etc. Can't complain too much because he works so hard.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this post at the #WednesdayAIM #LinkUp #BlogParty. I shared it on Pinterest.
ReplyDeleteThis table is obviously a labour of love and respect. This is my first time on your blog and your attention to detail and use of different products is a new concept for me. The final product is very lovely and quaint.

ReplyDeleteTalk about a work in progress! Well done on finally getting the table finished and doesn't it look fabulous. If you ever do take it to your booth (after all, you've been together for quite some time) I bet it won't be long before it walks away with a new owner.
