First up today is a silverplate round tray turned into a Chalkboard Welcome Home.
Supplies I used: Round silverplate tray (a thrifted find), Frog Tape, Rust-oleum Chalk board Paint, red apron (my preference for clothing protection), paint brush, chalk, wiping cloth.
Here are the steps I used. Tape the area that will remain unpainted. STIR the black chalk board paint slowly and well until it glints black instead of grey/black. Brush one coat onto area to be painted. Let it dry. Repeat 2-3 coats as needed.
DRY WELL between each coat of chalk board paint.Remove Frog tape carefully, touch up any areas that need more coverage.
Remember that chalk board paint dries quickly and is not easy to clean off hands or brushes so clean up right after using.
I usually let the chalk board paint dry overnight before preparing the chalk board surface for use. Take a piece of chalk (hold it flat on its long side) and rub over the chalk painted area then remove this chalk with a cloth. Add your message and display.
This process is similar to the Welcome Home Chalkboard Wooden tray I wrote about April 14/13.
Next up is a clip board made into a chalkboard. I've turned clipboards into message boards before.
This one has been very useful as a background for vignettes/photos. Good for leaving messages too.
A vignette with the clipboard chalkboard.

Last upgrade is an Ikea Chalkboard, with its natural finish, found at a flea market. Before was ok but...the chalkboard was so well used.
This is the 'after' in progress.
I re-painted the chalkboard (same method as earlier in this post) then painted the frame with CeCeCaldwell Simply White and finished it with CeCeCaldwell Satin Finish.

Some great ideas. I have put aside some silver trays from the family stash that I won't be using and have been thinking about painting them. Chalkboard paint on the flat part could be an option.
ReplyDeleteSo creative and pretty! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post! Great ideas and nice tutorial. Thanks so much!

ReplyDeleteChalkboards are a lot of fun. I like the idea with a silver tray.
ReplyDeleteAll are so cute. I just bought a really cute tool caddy at TJ Maxx and one side of it is a chalkboard. I love writing different messages.

Fun! I made a chalkboard on the glass of an old print that I didn't care about any more. It is hanging in my laundry room. Yesterday I just brainstormed summer things and wrote them up there. My son said, "You are so crafty." That just cracked me up because it's not true. :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE chalkboard projects! I just picked up an old maple mirror left from a dresser long gone. The mirror is ruined, no pretty silvering or anything, so I'm going to make it an unusual chalkboard. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Joy,
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun lesson in chalkboard 'design'! Have never tried this, thanks for inspiring me! Love the 'Welcome Home' sign, so inviting!
