Herons - Favorites

They have rested on my shed roof, glided over the house, eaten all the fish in my neighbours pond, nested in the rookery about five miles away, been viewed hunting in ponds, streams, road side water ditches and flying over roadways.

Herons have long been a favorite and over many years I collected heron pictures, ornaments, statues, lamps with herons... and very large chalkware plaques of herons. You may notice I have an old pottery container in my current header that is most likely a heron. I've let most of the collection go but I have the big heron chalkware plaques which I grouped for a headboard, must be going on 20 years now.
I love the colour, depth, difference and age of these pieces. Leg and leaves detail differs between each chalkware plaque, everything in basque relief.
The molds are not identical, the herons, insects and leaves vary as do the paint colours and there are right and left facing molds.
The painting style is similar in colour but not in execution. I have two other heron chalkware plaques of the same size that were painted gold.
I think the chalkware plaques are air brush painted and I am guessing they are likely from the 1950's or earlier but I couldn't find any similar pictures online. I added this last picture (story time with DGS) to show the size of the heron plaques.

  1. Herons are a favorite of mine, too, but we don't see them that often here. I saw one at a lake near by last month and was thrilled. I tried to get a photo of it but it was too far away.
    Have a great weekend,

  2. That is one of the most unique head board ideas I have ever seen. They are beautiful pieces and all three of them together must make an impressive center piece for your room. Really cool!

  3. Joy,

Thanks for coming by. The herons are beautiful.

  4. Herons are beautiful birds. I love going south to see them. The plaques are so pretty.

  5. Hi Joy,

Oh goodness, I love these plaques! The colors, the relief, the herons - all of it - make these such beautiful pieces. I can see why you love them and why you've hung on to them. I, too, love herons. I see them around here occasionally and always stop to take in their beauty.

Thank you so much for joining in this week.

  6. Hi Joy ~ I came right over after reading your funny comment and I'm so glad I did. You are truly artsy!

The Heron plaques are beautiful ~ what a treasure. I especially loved the dragonfly detail you showed.

We have Egrets visit our pond in our courtyard and I too have watched them eat my fish for breakfast. They're so elegant with those long legs, although they are pesky.

    I'll be back (:

  7. Your plaques are pretty - thanks for sharing them with us.
    No herons around here.
Thanks for stopping by and nice comment.
    Enjoy your weekend.

  8. Beautiful! I love the colors. Thanks for sharing these with us at Claudia's.

  9. Now I know what a heron is. They are rare here around. I never asked myself where they make their nests. Your collection is lovely.

  10. Thanks so much for sharing these beautiful heron plaques on Simple & Sweet Fridays. They're just gorgeous!
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  11. Herons are so interesting and you have a lovely set of chalkware plaques! The details are amazing. Hugs, Linda

  12. Thank you for sharing something of so much beauty today!

  13. I love to watch the herons at my daughter's in Wisconsin. Your plaques are stunning...Balisha

  14. Joy,
Oh! I love those, so very much! We are all about "green" over here and now I'll be on the hunt for something like those, so charming. And I love your idea of using them as a "headboard", how stunning that must look. Thanks so much for sharing them with us.

  15. Joy, I love your chalkware plaques. We have blue herons that live in some ponds near us, and I am fascinated by them. Must be a rookery nearby.

  16. Wow they are absolutely amazing! I can not believe the size of them. Very nice. Thank you for sharing at Cap Creations.

  17. Thoughs are quite the plaques.
    I love the colors.
    Have a great day.

  18. These plaques are just gorgeous, Joy. The colors are so vibrant, and the detail is really stunning. (I especially love the dragon flies and leaves.) I saw my first Heron in New Orleans, soaring up from an old Cypress in the Bayou. They are just so graceful! I can see why you're drawn to them.

Thanks for visiting. I read and appreciate all your comments. Joy
