Evolution of Style, Elizabeth & Co.: Be Inspired Features & Link Party No. 4, Type A: Anything Goes No. 54, Not Just a Housewife: Show Me What You Got No 59, A Bowl Full of Lemons: One Project at a Time
1870's. Canadian piece. Ontario. Pie Safe. kitchen furniture. mixed woods; has some butternut, poplar lined drawers, do not know what other woods were used. Has some Eastlake features (drawer fronts), original hardware (great hinges and hooks inside to close doors, has a pediment. Was found covered in red barn paint.
Lovely age, incredible wear. Siamese cat used it for a scratching post about 30 years ago. Mellowed. Patina. MIL was the previous owner and bought it out of the grocery money on July 26, 1969 and at the time that was a huge chunk of food money.
Text of note on back of framed receipt:
This tall pie safe with preforated sides was purchased in Williams Lake BC July 26 1969. When I was cleaning it there were scraps of paper lining from 1917. Sorry I didn't keep a scrap. It was covered in red shake paint that came off easily with paint stripper. It was not milky paint and was not original to the piece. If I had known there was a pediment I would have bought it at once. It took me 6 months to smarten up and it was the grocery money after all. Al Bowen of Bowen and Associates Pt. Coq. says Ontario made in a German country. May well be a Schrank.*
*I learned that schrank was a style of furniture, often hope chest that could be dismantled for travelling, German, and could not find out much more.

The virtual museum had this German made pie safe in its files.
Above is a picture of a pie pantry that looks much the same as the one I have but in a different condition. I put the web address for this woodwork company on the picture to ensure that it was attributed to the WoodworkInc company.
Tomorrow, the details of construction with pictures of hinges and hooks, remnants of locks, drawers, doors and pediment. Please check back tomorrow to see more (the post became sooooo long that I made it into two).
