Antique 140 year old Pie Safe Part 2

Linking to:

Recap from January 31/12 post: 1870's. Canadian piece. Ontario. Pie Safe. kitchen furniture. mixed woods; has some butternut, poplar lined drawers, do not know what other woods were used. Has some Eastlake features (drawer fronts), original hardware (great hinges and hooks inside to close doors, has a pediment. Was found covered in red barn paint (Pie Safe picture also a recap).
The sides were drilled with a great many holes in a planned pattern to allow air flow for the food stored inside.

Below are some close up details of the pie safe that is in my care.
Drawer details, replacement knobs
hinge, leg, foot, shelf, door details
Details of remnant of metal locks
Hooks and screws appear to be original and the eye may be a replacement
keyhole brass missing, shrinking wood at joins, significant wear
The pediment that was of greatest interest to the previous owner,
and much admired by all.
The pie safe is a kitchen cupboard and currently houses pots and pans and baking pans, salad bowls, and a bit of boxed food supplies in the cupboards and things that need to be out of reach on the top. The drawers are used for large utencils. At one time it was in the living room and was used to store LP's, china and linens.

Its interesting to use such old furniture as part of day to day activities. Comfortable acceptance.

  1. I love using old furniture and items day to day. The continuity between the old and new connects me to ancestors while encouraging me that I might have a place in my descendent's lives.
