Organization - Calendar and Key Hooks

Two main tools that help keep me organized are my calendar and my key hooks. Today I started writing about my calendar, moved on to keys and all of a sudden I am writing about gas in the tank, cleaning out the car and having a launch pad for each person in the home.
A 'large space' calendar is where everyone in this home adds their appointments, classes, meetings, where they will be... anything that affects their lives when they are outside the home and we/they all need to know where/what/when/why we/they are. January 2012, lots of white space - by the end of the month FULL.
The key hook - solved my panic problem finding the car/house etc. keys when getting ready to leave the house.

I have always 'used' a calendar but until I found a the lovely Flylady online (she is the Good Mom voice in one's head) I used notes, multiple calenders, emails ... now, if it is not on the calendar it does not exist. On calendar, off the worry part of the mind.

The next very helpful step is knowing where the keys are - always in the same place, so when I arrive home, I put my keys on their hook and when its time to run out the door (school starts in HOW many minutes????) the keys are there.

That of course leads to gas in the tank. Fill up before you need to. Saves a lot of angst, (and if your windows are iced up make sure to give yourself extra time to get your vehicle ready to go).

Which leads to clean the car interior (get those tissues in a garbage bag, homework into the house, back packs hung up by the exit door).

This leads to the 'Launch Pad'  in the next Organization post.

  1. It sounds like your getting organized. I need to do some organizing of my own. I like the key hanger. Pat

  2. Great ideas! I use a calendar/planner too. AND I have a key rack BY THE FRONT DOOR where I always keep my keys. Louis Dean - on the other hand - KNOWS it is there and still puts his keys just about any place!

  3. I love these ideas. I'm such an organization geek that anything that leads to better organization is so interesting to me! Such good points about keeping the car clean and gas tank filled.

    Happy New Year!

  6. I know exactly what you mean. I have a message center on my refrigerator. It attaches to the upper freezer compartment by magnets and has an erase board for small memos, a small cork space to tack notes to, and most importantly a large calendar that can be replaced every year. Everyone in the house is expected to write their appointments on the calendar. My grown up children (23 and 26) are still at home and they still make sure they write their schedules or like you say, it doesn't exist. We've all learned to rely on it.
